Paper cuts

Shadowplay and Silhouettes

The opportunity to exhibit at the Sou’ Sou’ West Open came with perfect timing. My papercut silhouettes were ready, my mixed media quartet was back from the framer and I was delighted with the resulting panel. It’s not often that I have an idea in my mind and the result more than exceeds my expectations. Sometimes it’s just the opposite!

I have created this papercut that had its origins during the Coronavirus pandemic. During this time I found myself with the time to experiment with mixed-media. I combined coloured inks to create multi-coloured backgrounds, such an example is here in this post.

My background papers were torn and collaged onto canvas and the results became the inspiration for the papercut elements. I designed stencils and used hand-printed papers, so it’s a good job I had plenty to choose from.

I could submit three pieces for this exhibition so I chose two black and white positive/negative papercuts. This seemed to me to complement to the colour collaged mixed-media work. You can spot them in the panel above.

My papercuts are traditional single-fold cuts where I use pencil line and scissors on a silhouette paper. I find this an enjoyable and relaxing way to experiment with pattern, shape and contrast.

A selection of cards are also available during the exhibition, these designs may also be available for sale on my lovefromtheartist website, so please have a look when you have a minute.
